This year Chinese New Year falls on the same day as Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2010. The holiday is celebrated with big family gatherings, gift giving, the eating of symbolic foods and display of festive decorations which are all focused on bringing good luck for the new year and celebrating the coming of Spring.

Chinese New Year celebrates the beginning of the new year according to the lunar calendar. The lunar calendar is based on the phases of the moon – which has a shorter cycle than the sun. Chinese New Year is never on the same day every year, however it usually falls between January 21st and February 20th.

Chinese New Year is a big holiday in China and used to be celebrated for a long time. Now, however, Chinese New Year is celebrated for 15 days.
